Jo Jo's best friend at home is her cat Mimi. Jo Jo had a best friend at school, but she's afraid Fern doesn't want to be friends anymore. Which makes it even more important for Jo Jo to protect Mimi. That's why Jo Jo sneaks Mimi into her backpack and takes her to school when she overhears her mom is planning on taking Mimi her to get shots. What will happen to her cat at school? Will she make a new best friend?

Jo Jo Makoons is a great addition to the cannon of fiesty and funny early chapter book heroines like Ruby Lu and Gooney Bird Greene. She lives on an Ojibwe reservation and some Ojibwe and Michif words are sprinkled throughout, which is a fun bonus. There's ample illustrations and short chapters which make it perfect for students just transitioning to chapter books.

Rescue on Turtle Beach

It all started with a pesky seagull. When it steals Sofia's ice cream cone, Max offers her a replacement and before they know it that same gull leads them to an abandoned sailboat. Soon the magical boat whisks them away to Hawaii where a nest of baby sea turtles is in trouble. Will Max and Sofia be able to save the turtles with the help of a new friend, Laila? Or will the poor, helpless turtles be doomed?

This is a great early chapter series for animal lovers. The sailboat is magical, but the dangerous situation the sea turtles face is all too real. The ample pictures and short chapters along with fun animal facts and plenty of action make this an engaging read for children just starting chapter books.

Hand-Me-Down Magic

Del and Alma are cousins and best friends and soon they will live in the same building, above the Curious Cousins Secondhand Shoppe. Alma is excited to live closer to her family, but at first it feels like she doesn't belong. Del can't wait for Alma to move in, but she wishes Alma believed in magic like she does. When the best friends get in their first big fight and Del's magical earrings go missing will they be able to work it out or will the move turn out to be a disaster?

I love the family relationships in this book between the cousins but also the grandmother and great-aunt who run the shop and all the other relatives that live in the building. The story switches between Alma and Del's perspectives so you can see both sides of the story and understand where their disagreement is coming from. I love the way it depicts life in a big city and the hints of magic throughout. A warm, wise, wonderful book for the early chapter book crowd

Tola is the youngest of three, but don't underestimate her! Even though she is smaller than her siblings her kindness, bravery, and determination help her to do great things. From standing up to mean older kids to helping neighbors in need with her amazing number skills, Tola saves the day again and again. Get to know Tola and her neighbors in Lagos, Nigeria in this sweet, realistic story.

I love a character who is small but mighty so I naturally love Tola! This early chapter book has ample illustrations and three short stories that are quick to read and entertaining. With great lessons and a wonderful setting this is a perfect read-aloud book.

Sona Sharma

At first when Sona hears that she's going to have a baby brother or sister, she is not excited. Everyone in her family is talking about the new baby and hardly paying any attention to her. She doesn't want to share her favorite baby clothes and toys and make space for another person in her family. But when she learns about the special naming ceremony she is determined to find the perfect one. Can Sona go from reluctant older sister to being the very best?

This story follows a large and loving family in India as they prepare for a new baby. Learning about the cultural traditions around this event is fun and everything is clearly explained and celebrated with adorable illustrations, sweet characters, and a relatable plot for anyone who has experienced changes in their family. A great story for new chapter book readers.

The Magic in Changing Your Stars

Ailey knows he has the moves to make the Scarecrow in his school's production of The Wiz really shine. But at his audition, his mind goes blank and he completely chokes. He isn't looking forward to telling his family, but when he gets home there's much bigger problems: his grampa is in the hospital. Grampa tells Ailey about the time he met Bojangles and was given a pair of tap shoes and invited to audition, but he never worked up the courage to try. It's his biggest regret in life. When Ailey finds the tap shoes in the closet and makes a wish, he's transported back in time. He has the chance to change his grampa's life, and maybe his own too.

The author's love for history shines through. I love how the characters are named after Alvin Ailey, Benjamin Banneker, Mahalia Jackson and more (there's a list in the back with brief bios of their real-life counterparts). Henderson also does an amazing job conveying the tap sequences through onomatopoeia (I would love if it was made into a movie just so I can see the dances). Ailey's love for his family is the moving force behind the novel and a great warmth radiates from that. It' would make an excellent read-aloud with plenty of jumping off points for discussion.

Shirley and Jamila Save Their Summer

When their mothers are determined to send them to summer camp, Shirley and Jamila come up with a plan to convince their mothers to allow them to play together instead. Even though they just met, they are happy to hang out on the basketball court together all day. Jamila practicing her shooting and Shirley reading and meeting with the neighborhood kids. But when Jamila finds out that Shirley's an amateur detective, she's determined to help with her cases. Will they find the missing gecko and catch the pool thief? Or will their mothers catch them sneaking around and send them off to camp?

I love this new Sherlock and Watson duo. After some misunderstandings and leaps to judgement, they learn to work well together. The mystery was fun to piece together and every character's personality played an important part. Great for young mystery and comic fans.

Not only does he help Lily get over her writer's block, but he helps Grace discover that she's an author too. What can't wondrous Rex do?

This is a cute story with just a touch of magic perfect for young dog-lovers. The ample pictures and short sentences and chapters make it just right for kids starting to read chapter books.

Skunk and Badger

Picture
Badger lives in a house owned by his aunt where he can focus on his Important Rock Work. He hates any distractions and never goes out to meet new people. Which is why he's shocked and upset when his aunt sends Skunk to live with him. Skunk makes friends with all the local chickens and invites them inside. Skunk makes breakfast and leaves a mess in the kitchen. Skunk interrupts his Important Rock Work. Clearly Skunk must go. But how can he makes Skunk leave? And what will he do once Skunk is gone?

This is a classic odd couple story that hits all the right notes. Badger is the perfect grump even though his desire to work uninterrupted is relatable, if extreme. Skunk brings all the right elements of chaos to shake up his life and ultimately improve it. Skunk's loyalty is admirable and the prejudice Skunk faces because of the occasional smell feels completely unjust. Short chapters with lots of laughs interspersed with beautiful illustrations make this a perfect choice for young chapter book readers or reading aloud.

Mangoes, Mischief, and Tales of Friendship

Every day, King Bheema opens up his court to his subjects. Some come with complaints about a neighbor, some with tricky problems to solve. King Bheema deals with each fairly. Prince Veera watches his father and is excited when his chance finally comes to take over for a day. But some of the problems present unique challenges and puzzling circumstances. Will Prince Veera and his best friend Suku be able to solve them all?

This story is excellent for fans of folklore and traditional puzzle stories. Each chapter presents a classic dilemma for Prince Veera to solve. Children will enjoy trying to solve the puzzles before Veera and it would make a great class read-aloud so students can work together to try and solve them. The Indian setting only adds to the appeal, as does the sense of humor present throughout. Short chapters and ample illustrations make it great for young readers.
