Mercy Wong is a teenage girl living in Chinatown in the year 1906. Her education in Chinatown was not enough for her smarts, so she sets off to get an education at the prestigious school for wealthy white girls, Saint Clare's. Being Chinese in San Francisco at that time was hard enough, but being Chinese in a school of girls unlike her is even harder. Teased, mocked, and bullied by room mates for being Chinese, Mercy struggles to find her place in this strange school. Disaster strikes when the infamous 1906 Earthquake hits, and Mercy has to work together with her classmates to help others and stay alive.

The war that saved my life is about a girl and  her little brother. They run away from their evil evil mom who slaps them and beats them. She doesn’t let the girl named Ada out of the house because she has a clubfoot apparently it’s her fault. They run away and meet this very nice lady named Susan.

This is an action packed story that's emotional and amazingly tells the tale of a boy who would do whatever it takes to get home and save his friends.

This book is sad and you have hope throughout the whole entire book for young middle schooler Suzy Swanson. This girl is not what you would expect. She thinks stuff that some people would not even think of like the formation of ants, sleep patterns, and the about 20 million of Shakespeare's atoms but she can not explain how Franny Jackson's life ended short. This is a heart breaking and sad tale. You will seek hope for  young Suzy.
