Duane ends the book with a letter addressed to you, the reader. Try writing a response to Duane. Tell him about yourself and an adventure you've had. You can write the letter, draw a picture, even make up a song. What might a book about you and your friends be called?
The painter says that he paints all sorts of things: beautiful things, sad things, scary things, and lonely things. Do you like to capture moments in an artistic way: drawing, painting, photographing, writing, or something else? What kinds of moments do you like to capture? Happy moments? Exciting moments? Why?
In this chapter, Duane tries describing a new type of animal to C.C. He has some difficulty at first but C.C. eventually figures it out. You can try an animal guessing game yourself! To play you need at least two people.
Player one should think of an animal. Player two then asks yes or no questions to get more information. For example: Is the animal you're thinking of a mammal? Does the animal you're thinking of have four legs? Does the animal you're thinking of have feathers? Is the animal you're thinking of a carnivore (eats only meat)?
If you want to make it harder, set a limit on the number of questions that can be asked before player 2 has to guess. Don't forget to take turns for who is thinking of the animal and who is guessing!
Duane is "led by his curiosity" in this chapter. When have you been led by your curiosity? Do you enjoy watching artists and craftspeople work? Have you ever seen a glass blower or a blacksmith at work? Every object has a story behind it and if you look into it, you never know where your curiosity might lead you!
Major Puff acted very bravely to defend his friend, even if it turned out she wasn't really in any danger. When is a time you have done something brave? When has someone else done something brave for you?
In this chapter Major Puff looks for a new home. He want somewhere that is clean and spacious. He ends up finding a great new friend. What do you think is important in a home? Do you like your room to be very clean or do you like a little mess? Why do you think Major Puff and the hare get along so well. What do you look for in a new friend?
Duane knows in his gut that it's dangerous to toboggan down Baby Whaleback Hill, but he does it anyway to impress his friend. Luckily Sun Girl and the Pack are able to save him. Have your friends ever tried to get you to do something you know is wrong? What did you do? What might you tell them if it happens again? Pretend with a trusted adult that it is happening again and practice how to say "no". As Dumbledore said “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Remember you can always say no to something that doesn't feel right.
Duane picks out a very thoughtful gift for Handsome. What's the most thoughtful gift you have given? What's the most thoughtful gift you have received? Personally, I love hand-made gifts. It's so touching to see that someone really knows your tastes and put time and effort into a present!
I am also a fan of afternoon tea. I would have loved to join Duane, Handsome, and Magic for their tea party in this chapter! Have you ever been to a tea party before? There's no time like the present to try one!
Duane lets his imagination gets away with him as he imagines a monster in the snow cave. Luckily for him, it turns out to be a new group of friends instead. Have you ever imagined something would be scary when it turned out to be fun instead? Like jumping off a diving board or riding a roller coaster? Duane gives himself courage by thinking of himself as an explorer. What kinds of things could you say to yourself when you need courage?
Duane loves hugs while C.C. doesn't like to be touched. Duane figures out that to be a good friend, he needs to respect how C.C. feels and decides to make up a secret blinking signal to show his thanks. Are you more like Duane or C.C.? Is there anything special you do to make your friends feel happy and comfortable?
Duane and C.C. do an experiment with ice to see what Duane likes best. Try a flavor experiment yourself this week!
