March was a busy month with 2,231 circulations. The kindergarteners in Sequoia checked out the most books of any class. Tintin and Garfield are very popular at the moment and placed in both the top searches on Destiny Quest and the most checked out titles category. It was a good month for communication with 5 blog posts and 25 tweets as we followed the Battle of the Kids' Books.
We had a short, but busy month in February. We had 1,884 circulations despite a week of vacation and the comics section continued its popularity winning area with the most checkouts, 4 of the 5 top titles, and 3 of the 5 most checked-out titles. March is the first month without any vacation time in it for a while so I'm excited to see next month's statistics!
Even with the vacation there were still 1,718 books checked out last month. A lot of students were gearing up for the holidays with 'Christmas' one of the top search terms and two of the top five titles winter-themed. Picture books remain the top category with the 700's following. The popularity of the 700's can also be seen with 'comics' being one of the top search terms and two of the five top titles being comic books.
November was a busy month with the book fair taking over the first floor for a week, grandparents and special friends day, and the Thanksgiving break. Despite students being unable to check out books for about half the month due to these events, there were still 1,804 items checked out. We have a spread of kindergarten to third grade classrooms with the most check-outs and picture books won the favorite area category again, with the 700's trailing close behind. The 500's (the nonfiction animal books) did particularly well this month with two grades working on projects involving researching local animals. We've been busy processing all the new books that were generously donated at the book fair and preparing for the next break, only a couple of weeks away!
Picture books continue their reign as favorite area while comic books sweep the most checked out titles category. The homerooms with the most checkouts are split between kindergarten, first, second, and third grades. Unsurprisingly 'Halloween' was the most searched for term in October as kids looked for books to go along with their trick or treating. Meanwhile we had a whopping total of 2,498 books checked out.
We're off to a great start this year in the LRC. There were 2,366 items checked out during the 17 school days we had in September. The single homeroom with the most check-outs was Hickory with 199 books checked out last month. Of the top five homerooms two were kindergarten and two were first grade. They must have been checking out a lot of picture books because that was the area with the most check outs--507 picture books were checked out in September. I wonder how long it will be able to hold the title of favorite section this year. Look out for next month's infographic to see if the 700's overtakes them.
Even with spring vacation we still checked out 1,408 items to the MCDS community last month. Hunger Games fever is still strong with 'Hunger Games' the second most searched for query and 'Catching Fire' the fourth (See my previous blog for resources to use to start further conversation around topics brought up in the Hunger Games series.) Series fiction continues to remain popular in the most checked out titles with the enticingly named Do Not Open the only stand-alone title in the bunch. The 700's with comics, sports, movies, and art continues to be the most frequented section of the library closely followed by picture books and easy readers as our students practice their reading skills before summer break. There's only a few more weeks to check out books and then on May 18th everything will be due back so that we can get organized before summer. Let me know in the comments if there's anything special you'd like to see in the year-end wrap up infographic.
A lot of people were eager to read The Hunger Games last month with the movie coming out. It came in at the number one spot on most searched for terms. Other popular series took the other spots for most searched for terms. The top titles included two books from the popular comic series Amulet and one from the comic series Babymouse. In fact, four of the top five titles were comics. This trend is reflected in the areas with most circulations last month. Comics take the top spot once more, followed by picture books and DVD's.
Despite the week vacation, we still had 1,946 items checked out last month. Series fiction remains popular with all of the top five searches being for character names and four out of the five most checked out titles books in a series. I've placed the series name in parentheses after the title. The other theme connecting these popular titles is humor. There's nothing like a good, funny book to lighten up a dark winter day. I've kept the bubble chart format from last month for the most popular areas and I find it interesting to see how popular each section is in comparison to its size. I wonder if these trends will continue into the spring.
