At the end of every school year, we read character books to every kindergarten to third grade class. They vote on their favorite using a ranked choice technique. The winner is added to our hall of fame and gets the chance to join MCDS community members on summer adventures. This year's candidates were Anna Hibiscus, Charlie & Lola, Frances, Little Rabbit, and Yoko. All of the competitors had a good showing and it was a tight race, but the winners are... Charlie & Lola! We had a lovely crowning ceremony and victory party with all of our past winners in attendance to congratulate them on this honor. Now, on to the prizes: Charlie and Lola have won an all-expenses paid trip to visit you this summer! Print out Charlie & Lola to take with you, or add them to your vacation photos easily with our .png images. If you need any help, simply e-mail your photos to me and I'll add our winners in for you. Here's some pictures of us with last year's winner Rocket: Charlie and Lola have packed their bags and are ready for any adventure. They have also requested that some students invite them into their homes to read with them, especially if you have a copy of Beetles, Bugs, and Butterflies! So, help us congratulate our winners and invite them to visit YOU this summer! Remember to send all your pictures to [email protected] and I'll make a display with them in the fall.

We're always working on projects in the library to make it easier for our community to use our collection and find what they are looking for. Here's what we've been working on lately. ALA Youth Media AwardsThe American Library Association has announced its Youth Media Award winners. This includes the Caldecott and Newbery as well as the Coretta Scott King, Pura Belpre, Stonewall, and many others. There's a lot of great books that have won. We have a display in the Dragon Room with all the winners we have in our library. Stop by to see who won, then check out the book! Holiday BooksWe recently pulled the holiday books from our picture book collection and put them in their own special section on the endcap of the shelves. The books are sorted by which holiday they are about, then by author. This will make it much easier for anyone looking for a read aloud for a specific holiday, as well as relieving crowding in our picture book section. Juvenile Fiction AudiobooksLast year we created a juvenile fiction section on our first floor to accommodate students who are reading at a 3rd or 4th grade level but need books whose content is better suited to younger readers. We have now mirrored this in our audiobooks. Our Juvenile Fiction Audiobook section is located on the first floor and has books that younger students can enjoy. If you're going on a family roadtrip with young kids, this is a great place to look! |
