These Violent Delights

The streets of 1926 Shanghai are dangerous, but Juliette walks them with confidence. As the heir of the Scarlet Gang she's untouchable, and if anyone were foolish enough to try and hurt her, she's more than capable of defending herself. The only one who came close is Roma, heir to the White Flower gang. Sure, his betrayal years ago stung, but it only served as a lesson in the dangers of allowing others, especially enemy others, to get too close. When rumors of a mysterious monster rise and people across the city start clawing their own throats out, Juliette knows she can't stem the rising tide of blood alone. Against her better judgement, she must put old grudges aside and work with Roma to get to the bottom of this mystery. Will the city be able to survive this gruesome threat? Will her heart be able to survive working with Roma?

This vivid and gory take on Romeo and Juliet is completely enthralling, but not for the light of heart. The gang violence is intense enough before adding in the supernatural horror. Fans of Shakespeare will enjoy the references hidden throughout, but will still be kept on their toes as the plot varies dramatically. The setting is practically a character in itself and is beautifully portrayed. Between the action scenes is strong characterization and a slow burn romance providing something for a wide range of readers.

Sixteen Scandals

As the youngest of four sisters, Primrose is used to being forgotten. She isn't expecting a huge celebration for her sixteenth birthday, but even she is surprised when her family doesn't acknowledge it at all. When her mother informs her that she will not be allowed to come out into society until her older sister is married, she contemplates a plan she would never have dared before. Prim and her best friend decide to sneak out in disguise and go to the infamous Vauxhall Gardens for their own birthday celebration. But when the night turns dangerous and Prim becomes entangled with a snooty gentleman she isn't sure whether it will turn out to be the best or worst night of her life.

This book is light, fluffy fun for those looking for a historical romance in the style of Jane Austen but with a more modern sensibility. Great to read over a cup of tea and a tray of biscuits.

Blade of Secrets

Ziva creates weapons imbued with magical properties that are coveted across the kingdoms. But she's not a fighter, and even talking to people other than her sister can send her into an anxiety spiral. So when she makes a blade that uncovers a deadly secret, she has no choice but to flee. Soon Ziva, her sister, a scholar, and a mercenary are running for their lives with an entire army hunting them down. How will Ziva ever find safety again, and what other secrets will the blade reveal?

This is a creative premise for a novel that makes me wonder what stories are happening behind the scenes when legendary weapons are created. The way Levenseller portrays Ziva's anxiety really resonated with me and I loved the way the relationships between the characters grew and changed over the course of the novel. A great read for fans of fantasy adventure.

River of Royal Blood

The Queendom of Myre was created in blood when Queen Raina massacred the natives of the land and her own sister. Ever since, the indigenous people have been forced to live in prison camps and every queen must prove her strength by winning a battle to the death with her own sister. As Eva's 17th birthday approaches, so does the day she must face her older sister for the crown. If she has any hope of winning, she must find someone to teach her the form of magic she was born with. A rare and feared magic of blood and marrow that hasn't been seen since Queen Raina herself. Eva finds unlikely allies in a powerful fey godling and an enemy prince. But with an assassin hot on her tail, she may die even before the long-awaited battle on her birthday.

This novel, set in a North African inspired fantasy world, completely swept me away and left me engrossed in its characters and history. The world building and plotting are superb as Eva is faced with impossible choices and continues on in spite of it, finding her own path. If you like fantasy adventure stories, you will love this one.

Love is a Revolution

Nala was hoping to find love this summer, but she never thought she'd find it at an Inspire Harlem event. The activist organization is her cousin-sister-friend Imani's thing. Tye is perfect and she can't believe he's into her, so she pretends to be a vegetarian and acts like she's volunteering at a local retirement home instead of just hanging out doing puzzles with her grandmother. At first being with Tye is better than her wildest dreams. But soon she gets tired of pretending to be someone she's not. What will happen when Tye finds out she's been lying to him? Why shouldn't she be enough as she is? Soon her dream summer turns into a nightmare.

The theme of the novel is captured by the title and watching it all unfold was incredibly moving. Topics ranging from self-image to activism are explored without it ever feeling preachy. Every character is well-drawn and layered and the way the plot all comes together is masterful. I absolutely adored this novel and highly recommend it

Charming as a Verb

Henri is a charming, popular student, star debater, and dog walker extraordinaire. He's passionate about taking care of his neighbor's dogs, but he knows they'll trust a corporation more than some kid, so he makes a fake dog walking company complete with its own website. No one suspects he's the only employee, except for his neighbor Corinne. She has problems of her own. She knows recommendation letters can make or break a college application and hers keep saying that she's too intense and doesn't fit in socially. She promises Henri she'll keep his secret as long as he uses his popularity to reform her image. At first it's a grudging arrangement, but as they get to know each other better Henri's feelings change. Which is why it's so devastating when he has to decide between his dreams for his future and betraying Corinne.

Ben Philippe is just as charming as his protagonist, judging from this and his other book. Reading a book of his is always a pleasure. This book is a classic rom-com premise but with thought-provoking messages of society's expectations for its main characters and academic integrity.

Inheritance Games

One day Avery was sleeping in her car. The next she was a billionaire. Avery has no idea why Tobias Hawthorne chose to leave his vast fortune to her instead of his family. She's never even met him. But she was not prepared for all the challenges and danger that her new-found wealth would bring. Now she's living in a mansion filled with secret passages and Tobais's bitter relatives. Tobais's grandsons are convinced he's left them answers in the form of a puzzle and clue filled treasure-hunt. Avery teams up with the handsome Jamie to uncover the mystery, but when attempts are made on her life she realizes how deadly these inheritance games are.

This is a fun mystery full of quirky characters, puzzles, and intrigue. Even though Tobias is dead when the book begins, the eccentric billionaire plays a big role in the novel along with his passion for building secret passages and creating puzzles. He has four grandsons around the age of Avery and her sister, who all have their own unique personalities and reactions to being disinherited. On top of that there's a mystery surrounding an ex-girlfriend of the grandsons who recently died. There's a lot going on, but it all comes together in the end in a satisfying conclusion. A page-turning adventure.

Pepper may seem like she has it all, but her life is falling apart. Her parents' divorce created huge cracks in her family and now her older sister isn't talking to her mother. Her parents' fast food chain has gone national and she lives in a swanky apartment with her mother in New York City and secretly runs the company's twitter account while trying to keep up with school, college applications, and being the new captain of the swim team. Her only bright spot is the anonymous chat app where she's slowly falling in love, the problem is she has no idea who the person she's chatting to is. Jack has problems of his own. His family's small deli is struggling to get by and his more popular twin brother leaves him with all the work but none of the credit. When their signature sandwich is stolen by a big chain restaurant, he calls them out on twitter. What ensues is a messy conflict that has people all over the country picking sides and egging them on. Who will win the twitter war, and what will happen when the anonymous chat app reveals their secret identities?

This is a rom-com at its best. It's light and funny but still has a heart. The trope of enemies falling in love anonymously is well-trod from movies like You've Got Mail and The Shop Around the Corner to the musical She Loves Me (a favorite of mine). But there's a reason why this story keeps getting retold and that's because it's so satisfying. This update captures the current world of social media and is sure to capture plenty of fans as well.

Dance of Thieves

Kazi used to be known as "the Ghost" pulling off daring thefts and surviving the streets on her own ever since her mother was taken by slavers. Now she's a member of the Queen's elite guard where the hard lessons she learned as a child have been put to different use. Jase is the new patriarch of the famous outlaw clan the Ballengers after his father's sudden passing. He's willing to do anything to protect his family, and sometimes that means getting his hands dirty. Jase and Kazi work for opposite sides and don't trust each other, but when they're both kidnapped, they have to learn to work together to survive.

I loved everything about this book. There's a large cast of characters, but each are well-developed and have a complex range of motivations that often put them at odds. The details of the word and its history provide a great backdrop without ever becoming cumbersome. The shifting perspectives between the two main characters allows for plenty of dramatic tension as the reader has access to information that the protagonists don't. The way it comes all together in the end is masterful and satisfying while still leaving room for the sequel.

Poisoned

A cruel stepmother entranced by a magic mirror, a girl with a heart cut out by a huntsman, and seven dwarves who find and save her. You may think you know the story of Snow White, but this twist on the tale will leave you with a new perspective on what a heart can do and how poison can destroy us all.

Sophie is a much more resilient and inspiring figure than the usual depiction of Snow White. She has much more agency in her fight to survive to save not only herself, but her people. The step-mother is as wicked as ever, but how she became that way is painted with more understanding. Great for fans of fairy tales retold.
