Early, her brother Jubi, mother Summer and father Dash are thin on money but fat on love. Language, poetry and rhythm are an essential part of the Pearl family’s life. You just love being in their home feeling the joy that take in each other and in learning and having fun. When Early’s father, who works as a page in a Chicago Library, gets drawn into a diamond theft he disappears leaving the family in dire straits. They wind up homeless in the city’s shelter system and you feel like you are there with them experiencing the frustrations, sorrows and boredom. Summer seems to give up hope and it is up to Early to solve the mystery of Dash’s disappearance and prove his innocence. Here is a heroine to love. She is smart and feisty and absolutely driven to bring her family back together.
I did not like how the author portrayed all the women in the shelter hitting their kids. I do not think this is accurate and stereotyping in this way is doing a disservice to you the reader. Be aware.
